Question for weight lifters

First off i used to body build-like 15 years ago-gave it up when vanes started popping out of my pecks etc.

Lately i have lifted alittle here and there and my mucsles on my shoulders below my neck feels like its pulling my arms up,and they are rock hard.

Ive done six massages by a deep massage and my area there just doesnt seem to relax.

Any suggestions?

Forest,
Best info site:
www.t-nation.com

Has tons of info on all aspects of weight training.
Sounds as if you are over training those muscles.
Hard muscles are good - just make sure that you are working all major groups with appropriate recovery time for each.

Just sounds like you need to scale it back a little to begin with. A lot of advancements have been made in the fitness arena in the last 15 years. If you really want to have some functional strength go to www.crossfit.com and do the workouts of the day . It is at the cutting edge of training. I have been doing it for a year, its awesome + all the workouts are scaled back on brand x crossfit to several different levels.

I have no affiliation with crossfit or its trademark.

Do you maybe think that im pushing on a side?

Reason why i say this i was in an altercation, and i was stabbed with a screwdriver twice on my side, then another time i had a bat hit me three times on my shoulder and it hasnt been right since,it hurts when i move it up too far fast.

I think when i got beat up that time i might have had something toren?
Plus my leg they kicked and i lost 80% of my cartlige and had to have it removed.

Should i still do presses?

Hi Forest,

I'm NocturnalEgyptian's girlfriend, and I'm a massage therapist. I came over to visit and (big surprise) he has GiM up, with your question onscreen. It sounds like you may have had either a full tear or some micro-tears when you were struck, and when tears like that heal, they tend to be tougher and less flexible than uninjured muscle tissue. The good news is that since it's still mobile, you can probably undo some of that scarring if you can find a deep tissue massage therapist who is schooled in cross-fiber friction techniques. It'll hurt like hell while you're getting it done, but it realigns the muscle fibers so they function more efficiently and will feel MUCH better in the long run. I would definitely tell your massage therapist what happened, and they'll be able to help you better. Try to find someone via referrals from doctors, physical therapists, osteopaths or chiropractors...that's the best way.

You can also get a tennis ball and stretch the muscles yourself, which will help but won't really reduce the scar tissue, it will just make it more flexible. Take the ball and put it on the floor. Lie back so that the tennis ball is between your shoulder blade and your spine, roll it around a little until you find a good spot, and slowly sink some (or all) of your weight onto it. Only go as far as you're comfortable with. After you're done with that spot, you can move around your shoulder, repeating the stretch. You can do this anywhere on your body, and it's also great if you have low back problems, or hip issues, or just on your feet after a long day at work.

Good luck!
